Empire BCBS pulls out of Medicare Advantage Plus plan for New York City retirees

Empire BlueCross BlueShield won't be offering Medicare Advantage Plus plans to retired New York City employees, the payer said this week.

The city failed  to provide a start date and details regarding the exact benefit plans New York would be offering to its retirees by July 15, according to a July 18 Empire news release.

Empire said the timeline was important because further delays would not give retirees enough time to fully understand their options, benefits and coverage before the open enrollment this fall.

"Given the level of uncertainty at this time, we informed the city that Empire BlueCross BlueShield is not able to participate in offering the NYC Medicare Advantage Plus Plan," the payer stated.
