Longtime BCBS Vermont CEO to retire

Don George, president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, will retire at the end of 2025 after serving more than 16 years as the payer's chief executive. 

BCBS Vermont's board of directors is leading a recruitment and transition process beginning immediately, according to a Feb. 10 news release. 

Mr. George spent 32 years with BCBS Vermont in total, according to the release. During his tenure as CEO, he was instrumental in developing Vermont Collaborative Care, a joint venture with Brattleboro (Vt.) Retreat that integrated physical and mental healthcare management. 

He also led the company's 2023 affiliation with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. 

"For more than 30 years, Don George has been known for building strong strategic partnerships, leading the way on innovative products and services, cultivating a healthy organization and culture, and maintaining strong relationships," BCBS Vermont board chairman Charlie Smith said in the release. "His integrity and passion for people and teams is unmatched, and he has been an unwavering champion of local, nonprofit health insurance."
