CuraCor will include Blue Cross NC and other fully owned companies, allowing the new organization “to quickly partner and invest in new health programs and technologies to benefit customers,” according to a March 6 news release shared with Becker’s.
Blue Cross NC members will experience no changes to coverage, services or the open enrollment process. Insurance cards, provider networks and Medicaid and Medicare offerings will also remain the same.
“Our health care system is too expensive, too confusing and access remains a challenge across the nation. Consumers insist on a better experience, and we must evolve to meet the demands of today’s health care environment,” Tunde Sotunde, MD, president and CEO of Blue Cross NC and CuraCor, said. “CuraCor enables Blue Cross NC and its family of purpose-driven companies to ramp up solutions that respond quickly to these challenges, while bringing care for our customers and communities to the center of everything we do.”
In 2023, former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper signed a bill allowing Blue Cross NC to reorganize. At the time, representatives for the company said the reorganization was necessary to allow it to compete with for-profit insurers.
In 2024, Blue Cross NC purchased all North Carolina locations of FastMed, a national chain of urgent care clinics. The company also previously purchased Brighton Health Plan Solutions, a national third-party administrator.
Other BCBS companies have restructured in the last few years, with the goal of improving service to members and remaining competitive with for-profit rivals.
Earlier in 2025, Blue Shield of California launched a nonprofit parent company, Ascendiun, to manage the insurance business, the clinical services firm, and Stellarus, a new company focused on scaling healthcare solutions. Louisiana Blue, Horizon BCBS New Jersey and Blue Cross of Idaho have also recently restructured.
