Payers negotiate lower prices for exchange plans than commercial groups, study finds

Payers generally negotiated lower prices for healthcare exchange plans than commercial group rates at the same hospital, a study published in The American Journal of Managed Care found.

The study, published Sept. 15, compared price transparency data for common inpatient and outpatient services at the country’s largest hospitals by bed count and revenue. 

Conducted by researchers from the University of Southern California, the study found that reimbursement rates for health exchange plans were about 89 percent of the amount paid for commercial groups. 

Health exchange plan rates were much higher than the reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage plans.
