States ranked by average insurance premium as share of median income

On average, residents of Mississippi, New Mexico and Florida spend more than 10% of their annual salaries on health insurance premiums for coverage provided by their employer, according to AHIP's 2024 "Coverage at Work" report published in July.

The report included data for self-funded and fully insured employers.

States ranked by average employee contributions to premiums as share of median income:

Mississippi: 12.7%

New Mexico: 10.8%

Florida: 10.4%

Louisiana: 9.8%

Nevada: 9.4%

South Carolina: 9%

Oklahoma: 8.9%

Texas: 8.7%

Delaware: 8.4%

North Carolina: 8.3%

Alabama: 8.1%

Georgia: 8.1%

Missouri: 7.9%

Kansas: 7.6%

Maine: 7.6%
