States ranked by percentage of Medicaid enrollees in 2022

New Mexico had the highest percentage of residents enrolled in Medicaid in 2022, while Utah had the lowest, according to new data released by the Census Bureau Sept. 14 as part of its American Community Survey. The national Medicaid enrollment rate was 21.2 percent.

The data does not reflect the millions of people removed from Medicaid during the redeterminations process, which began in April. 

States ranked by percentage of Medicaid enrollees in 2022:

New Mexico: 33.6 percent

Louisiana: 32.4 percent

New York: 28.5 percent

West Virginia: 28.4 percent

Kentucky: 28.2 percent

Arkansas: 27.4 percent

California: 27 percent

Mississippi: 24.1 percent

District of Columbia: 24.1 percent

Michigan: 23.7 percent

Oregon: 23.4 percent

Massachusetts: 23.1 percent

Alaska: 23.1 percent

Oklahoma: 22.4 percent

Connecticut: 22.4 percent

Vermont: 22.1 percent

Rhode Island: 21.6 percent

Montana: 21.3 percent

Ohio: 21.3 percent

Pennsylvania: 21.2 percent

Arizona: 20.8 percent

Nevada: 20.7 percent

Indiana: 20.7 percent

Washington: 20.7 percent

Idaho: 20.6 percent

Alabama: 20.5 percent

Illinois: 20.2 percent

Maine: 20 percent

Maryland: 19.9 percent

Delaware: 19.8 percent

Iowa: 19.8 percent
