Aetna plans another round of layoffs; 2023 cuts total 600

CVS Health is planning to lay off an additional 70 employees at Aetna, in addition to a previously announced round of layoffs.

According to a WARN notice filed in Connecticut Oct. 26, CVS Health will lay off 70 Aetna employees at its Hartford headquarters effective Dec. 30. In August, CVS said it would lay off 521 Aetna employees in non-customer-facing roles beginning Oct. 21. With the newly announced job cuts, the total number of positions eliminated is 591.

Of the 591 employees affected, 336 live in Connecticut, according to the WARN filing, with the remaining employees working remotely but reporting to supervisors in Connecticut.

When Woonsocket, R.I.-based CVS Health acquired Aetna in 2018, it struck an agreement with state insurance regulators to keep employment at Aetna and its subsidiaries at 5,300 for at least four years after the closure of the deal. The employment levels reflected staffing as of Oct. 1, 2018, and the agreement expired in 2022.

Other major insurers, including Elevance Health, Cigna and Centene, have laid off employees in 2023.
